The Hop Garden

We have a little four-plant hop garden growing beside our shed. I planted it as a test run to see if I could grow hops at all before committing to a bigger planting. It has one plant each of Spalt Select, East Kent Golding, Willamette, and Centennial.

I selected the rhizomes to plant before I had a good feel for what flavor & aroma hops I would like to have on hand. When I plant a proper hop garden some time in the future, I will likely keep a couple of these varieties, drop one, and plant several others. I don’t think I’ll grow EKG again; it hasn’t produced cones in two years. Also, the types of beers you brew with EKG tend to be malt-forward. I would like to add more American aroma/flavor varieties, such as Cascade, Chinook, Simcoe, and Amarillo.
